Urban green spaces can promote mental and physical health, reduce morbidity in urban residents by providing psychological relaxation and stress alleviation, stimulating social cohesion and supporting physical activity. Moreover, green spaces in cities mitigate the effects of pollution and can reduce the urban heat island effect, which refers to heat trapped in built-up areas. However, green space per inhabitant in the city of Athens is one of the lowest in Europe. “Developing of Green Living Space” workshop brings together representatives from local administration, academia, CSR associations, civil society and city planners in an open discussion to address issues such as revitilizing and upgrading existing urban green spaces, codesigning new ones in a cooperative way through placemaking and involving and educating municipalities in the process.
