EU Green Week Partner Events – Striving to Reduce the Environmental Footprint of Polar Research

International Polar Foundation

Theme of event:During the last International Polar Year 2007-09, the International Polar Foundation (IPF), with the support of its many private sector partners and the Belgian State, designed and constructed the world’s first zero-emission polar research station - the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (PEA).

Fully operational since 2009, the primary goals of constructing the station was to drastically reduce the environmental footprint of conducting scientific research in Antarctica, and to show that is possible to live more sustainably anywhere on Earth, even in the extreme environment of Antarctica.
