  • Training and workshops

The Directorate-General for the Environment at the European Commission, together with the European Green Cities Secretariat, organised the European Green Capital and European Green Leaf Awards annually. These prestigious awards recognise European cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability, environmental innovation and better quality of life for their residents bringing together a growing network of frontrunning green cities that collaborate and inspire others.

This session guided cities through the application process, offering:

  • Expert advice from past winners: Heilbronn (2027 European Green Capital) and Assen (2027 European Green Leaf)
  • Insights into the assessment process from a member of the expert panel
  • Opportunities to ask questions and clarify doubts

Attendance was open to all cities and participation did not commit you to applying. With the application deadline set for 1 April 2026, there’s still time to prepare a strong submission.
