The European Green Capital Award has been firmly established in EU policy since 2010. Especially in our challenging times of environmental and health crises, the Award is an important instrument to support implementation of EU environmental policies and legislation on the ground. We need good examples that ‘going green’ is achievable and can go hand in hand with a thriving economy. Green Capital and Green Leaf winners go on as ambassadors to motivate and inspire others to follow their example not only during their title year but for the wider future – in the spirit of: once a green capital, always a green capital!

The Finnish host city of Lahti – a city once marked by rapid growth and urbanisation, high levels of environmental pollution and high unemployment rates - is today an urban sustainability pioneer. Whether it is in protecting and enhancing nature and biodiversity, significantly reducing municipal waste or driving behavioural change, Lahti is ahead. Climate change and environmental challenges are great threats to our society and Lahti clearly shows that going green is achievable. Going carbon neutral more than two decades ahead of the EU 2050 target is the best proof of this.
