The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, hosted a meeting, on May 2nd, 2023, with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius.

From 1 to 12 May, the EU will participate in the meeting of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions in Geneva.

Today, at the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP15) in Montreal, the EU together with a number of EU Member States and several other countries are joining forces to significantly increase finance for biodiversity from all sources.

Commissioner Sinkevičius, on behalf of the EU, has joined a high ambition Accelerator Partnership to support the future implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) under negotiations at COP15 in Montreal.

Today the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP15 meeting starts in Montréal. From 7 to 19 December, countries will aim to reach a global agreement for the protection of nature and the planet with long-term goals by 2050 and milestones for 2030.

The Commission welcomes the provisional political agreement just reached between the European Parliament and the Council on an EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains.

At yesterday's Environment Council in Luxembourg, the Commission secured an ambitious negotiating mandate for the upcoming COP27 Climate Conference in November and the COP15 Biodiversity Conference in December.
