The Road to Green: New TV magazine explores green solutions to current crises

Today, in cooperation with Euronews, the EU is launching a new TV magazine: “The Road to Green”. The programme explores how various aspects of the European Green Deal are taking shape on the ground, positioning EU environment policies as responses to ongoing societal challenges.  

The first episode, filmed while more than a quarter of the continent is already suffering from droughts, is dedicated to water resilience. It takes us to Spain and Germany, exploring various solutions to the looming water crisis, including desalination, water recycling and new water treatment technologies.   

In Germany, at Lake Constance, the TV magazine introduces scientists and water treatment specialists to explain where our tap water comes from, what happens to it once it is used, and how to guarantee the quality of drinking water, including in view of new pollutants. 

The second part of the episode takes us to Spain, one of the European countries most affected by droughts. In the region of Valencia, we meet farmers, scientists, and green-tech entrepreneurs, who turn to new water management approaches in order to secure a stable water supply.

Background 

EU policy has long recognised the importance of water and established a comprehensive legal framework to protect it. However, we are entering a new era, triggered by the acceleration of the triple planetary crisis. Over the last 5 years, floods, droughts and water scarcity have affected a growing part of Europe, creating damage to people and the economy, and increasing tensions between water users. Long term climate change projections prove that the EU must address this looming water crisis without delay. 

At the historic UN water conference in March 2023, the EU announced 33 commitments for water action, which contributed to over 600 commitments collected globally at the conference. They underpin the EU vision that, by 2050, the world should be resilient to increasing water stress, providing water security for all. Water resilience lies at the heart of preventing and addressing current and future health, food and energy crises. 

“The Road to Green” is a Euronews magazine in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Environment (ENV). It features monthly 8-minute videos, delivered in a road trip format, covering Europe’s continuing transformation to a circular, net-zero, nature-positive and clean economy.
