European Mobility Week recognises Green City Accord signatories for outstanding efforts

Two Green City Accord signatories, Tampere (Finland) and Valongo (Portugal) were crowned winners at the recent EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK awards ceremony in Brussels. Of the four award categories, Tampere and Valongo took home the 10th Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP Award) and the 2021 EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award for smaller municipalities, respectively.

When it comes to innovative initiatives that improve its citizens’ lives, Valongo was able to showcase a diverse array of projects and policies that advance sustainability and a clean and healthy urban future - from encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport, to improving air quality, reducing noise pollution and strengthening local biodiversity. The city also snatched the 2022 European Green Leaf Award for its citizen engagement and support of low-income residents transitioning to more sustainable ways of life.

Meanwhile, Tampere’s multidisciplinary approach to sustainable urban mobility planning stood out from the crowd because it empowers people to make healthier mobility choices that are active, safe and environmentally responsible, while remaining considerate of pollutants and access to green space. As the second largest urban area in Finland, the city aims to support its expanding population and protect the natural environment by introducing the city’s first biodiversity program and circular economy plan, and an update of the noise abatement action plan in 2022.
