The EU Ecolabel Personal Care category is growing with the addition of the new product group “Reusable Menstrual Cups” and with the adoption of revised criteria for Absorbent Hygiene Products.

In September 2023, revised EU Ecolabel criteria for Absorbent Hygiene Products and brand new criteria for Reusable Menstrual Cups were adopted. The eligible products under these two product groups range from tampons and sanitary pads to baby diapers and, for the first time, reusable menstrual cups can be awarded.

The new requirements will offer consumers a sustainable alternative to conventional sanitary products. The stringent criteria consider the environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle of the products, with a special focus on the use of less and safer chemicals, particularly relevant for products that are in direct contact with the skin. EU Ecolabel Absorbent Hygiene Products and Reusable Menstrual Cups are free of:

  • Fragrances
  • Parabens
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates
  • Antibacterial agents
  • Endocrine disruptors

In addition, the criteria encourage circular economy practices, including the promotion of reuse and recycling, waste reduction, sustainable behaviour by consumers and the use of recycled material in packaging.

Learn more about the new criteria at our upcoming webinar

On 11 October 2023 the European Commission will host an on-line technical webinar to present the new criteria, along with information on the procedure for how to apply for the EU Ecolabel. For more information and to register, please check the event page here
