EU Ecolabel facts and figures

As of March 2023, 2 367 licences have been awarded for 88 045 products (goods and services) in the EU market.

The number of EU Ecolabel licences keeps growing - figures of March 2023

Since September 2022, the overall number of awarded licences* and products continued to increase as the vast majority of EU Ecolabel product groups have witnessed an increase in both the number of awarded licences and products. This shows a continued interest in green products from businesses, citizens and retailers.

Compared to September 2022 figures, there has been an:

  • Increase in the total number of awarded products (+560 products = +0.6%)
  • Increase in the total number of awarded licences (+97 licences = +4%)

* One licence is an EU Ecolabel contract including one or several awarded products in a same product group.

24 new licences (+5%) have been awarded for Tourist accommodation, the leading product group for awarded licences with a total of 523! Also, Cosmetic products, Indoor cleaning services, and Hard surface cleaning products recorded high increments.

Licences and products per country

As of March 2023, most licences are awarded in  Italy (17%), Germany (16%), Spain (15%) and France (14%). Similarly, the majority of products are awarded in  Spain (18%), Italy (15%), France (13%) and Germany (10%).

Licences and products per product group

Out of the 2 367 licences in March 2023, the majority of them belong to the following product groups: Tourist accommodation services (22%), Hard surface cleaning products (15%) and Tissue paper and tissue products (9%).

The most popular product groups in terms of number of products are: Indoor and outdoor paints and varnishes (41%), Tissue paper and tissue products (17%), Textiles (10%), and Hard surface cleaning products (8%).

The vast majority of EU Ecolabel product groups have witnessed an increase in both the number of licences and products.

Additional explanation on the evolution of selected product groups:

  • From 2020 onwards, Electronic Displays (Decision (EU) 2020/1804) replaces the former product group Televisions.
  • From 2021 onwards, Cosmetic products (Decision (EU) 2021/1870) replaces the former product group Rinse-off cosmetics.
  • From 2022 onwards, Growing media and soil improvers (Decision (EU) 2022/1244) replaces the former product group Growing media, soil improvers and mulch.
  • Printed paper, stationery paper and paper carrier bag products (Decision (EU) 2020/1803) includes the three former product groups Converted Paper, Newsprint paper and Printed Paper, which were merged in 2020.
