Mamukko’s unique circular design business model

Mamukko is an Irish family business run by the Hungarian couple Nora and Attila Magyar. They are fifth-generation leather workers and 1st generation Irish upcycling pioneers since 2011. In their Kinsale-based workshop, they handcraft a range of sustainable lifestyle bags made of local marine textiles, ocean-race sails, decommissioned rubber life rafts and aeroplane parts combined with upcycled or top-quality Italian veg tan leather.

A Mamukko bag is born from the craft heritage of its founders (whose parents inherited the craft from their ancestors),  combined with the reuse of post-customer technical marine materials that are made to last. The company’s circular business model relies on extending the life of original pre and post-consumer materials and products with the aim of creating something beautiful, desirable and long-lasting. Doing this makes sense, for as the company’s master makers,  for their customers, for the economy and for the planet.

Being circular and responsible is embedded in Nora and Attila’s mindset, who strive to build a strong legacy. They want all materials to be used, and reused and their lives extended and enjoyed for as long as possible. They also want the skills they so value, love and respect to become the skills of others so that the community of makers and repairers can grow across Ireland. Through their work, they are planting the seeds of sustainable behaviour and contributing to a responsible and circular economy for textiles and related materials.

It requires discipline and a lot of commitment to run a sustainable business, but we could not do it any other way. We do it for love, not for the likes. We proudly carry on our family heritage and hope to pass on our knowledge and skills to the next generations
