Flora is a tool for communicating about the Natura 2000 network of protected sites. It performs searches on information collected by the European Environment Agency.
- Always check whether a nature site is open to the public before planning a visit!
- Change the language at the top of the page if you want Flora to answer in a different language.
- Flora only knows about locations in the EU - you can add the country to avoid any confusion! ("Cuba, Portugal", vs "Cuba") (yes, real town!).
The European Commission is committed to transparency and trustworthy, explainable use of AI.
Sources
In addition to the data input manually by the user, the service uses open geographical data to find the searched location from and publicly available information about Natura 2000 sites.
The service uses the city name provided by the visitor to search for a geographical location within the European Union. Based on the results of this search (which may not correspond to the intended location provided by the user), Flora selects the closest Natura 2000 site. Flora then generates a response based on predefined rules using artificial intelligence text generation, which may contain inaccurate statements.
Data protection
In compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the Regulation on the processing of personal data by EU Institutions, Flora does not store data about the visitor, the visitor’s input, or the responses it provides. No personal user data is shared or transmitted. All services used by Flora are hosted in European data centres, and all data processing complies with EU data privacy regulations.
