The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions, and Water Management has been a leader in water conservation and education for two decades, driven by two impactful initiatives: the Gen Blue platform launched in 2004, the Wasseraktiv platform established in 2009.

Gen Blue: Educating Austria's Youth on Water

Gen Blue is an innovative platform dedicated to educating Austrian youth about the importance of water. The website offers extensive information on current water topics, professions in the water industry, drinking water, natural water hazards, and water protection. Regularly updated with new content, Gen Blue provides comprehensive knowledge and engaging activities that young users will enjoy.

Focusing on youth aged 13-19, Gen Blue involves teachers and students to ensure that water education reaches a broad audience. Interactive elements, including hands-on activities, informative school materials, and easy-to-understand videos are available to help shape their understanding of water as a critical natural resource.

"By equipping the younger generation with this knowledge, Gen Blue aims to cultivate a sustainable awareness of water as the No. 1 resource." - Representative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management

Wasseraktiv: Public Engagement Through Photography

Since its launch in 2009, the Wasseraktiv platform has been a vital tool for fostering public engagement and awareness about water resources in Austria. Driven by the EU Water Framework Directive's call for public participation, the platform was established to encourage nationwide discussion and involvement in water management.

A standout feature of Wasseraktiv is its annual photo competition, which focuses on various water themes each year. This initiative highlights the diverse ecologies within Austria and emphasizes the critical role water plays in sustaining these environments. By encouraging participants to capture and share their unique perspectives on water, the competition fosters a deeper appreciation for this essential resource and raises public awareness about water conservation.

Amplifying Water Protection Messages

In spring 2020, Wasseraktiv and Gen Blue launched a poster on the Best Tips for Protecting Water Resources. It was promoted on social media, websites, and in person, helps educate young people and adults on safeguarding groundwater and drinking water in their daily lives. Informational videos and posters were also produced. It emphasises the importance of sustainable water management and bolsters public awareness through creative educational strategies.

Conclusion: Building a Water-Wise Future

These initiatives have helped thousands in Austria See Water Differently and align closely with the #WaterWiseEU campaign. By protecting groundwater, we not only secure our water supply but also enhance our resilience to droughts, contributing to both Austrian and European water resilience.
