Lene Lysell, the Manager at Huseby kindergarten, has led the way in transforming the kindergarten into a place that doesn't just value the environment. Here at the Huseby Kindergarten, they do more, they teach these values to the children they care for.
The “Environmental Police”
At the Huseby Kindergarten it is important that they involve the children in their efforts to protect the environment. They have established their very own “Environmental Police” to do just that. The “Environmental Police” are a group of older children at the Kindergarten who go on bin inspections to ensure that waste is being disposed of correctly. They idea is that these older children will lead by example and inspire all the children at the Kindergarten to be mindful of how they dispose of their waste.
The Bottle Deposit System
Another way the Kindergarten have included the children in their environmental measures is through the bottle deposit system. The Kindergarten installed a bottle deposit refund machine in their entrance area. This system encourages the children to recycle their plastic bottles to raise money which is then used for further environmental measures throughout the entire Kindergarten.
Environmental Activities
“In Huseby kindergarten, we focus on reducing consumption. For instance, we think more creatively and environmentally friendly – when creating activities for the children,” Kindergarten Manager Lene Lysell explained. The Kindergarten uses recycled materials in the classroom for all their art work. They use milk cartons, old CD's, yoghurt cartons, and more so they kids can get very creative.
Lene explained the clever concept behind the green kindergarten, “If it becomes natural to them, they won't think of this as something they do for the environment, but just as the way the world works.
