Lars Westra, entrepeneur, Nijmegen

Lars Westra is a consultant in sustainable growth and an advocate for the inclusion of children’s voices in global issuession of children’s voices in global issues.

First, we visit Nijmegen, the incoming European Green Capital for 2018, where we meet an inspiring and impressive young entrepreneur.

At just ten years of age, Lars Westra is probably Nijmegen’s youngest entrepreneur. Taking after his father, a consultant in sustainable growth, Lars has developed a keen interest in protecting the environment and ensuring a greener future for generations to come. His passion for sustainability is evident in his words and actions, as he actively works toward making a positive impact.

“For a while now, I have been busy with the topic of sustainability and making the world a prettier place to live in,” Lars explains. He firmly believes that education and empowerment are key factors in addressing environmental issues. “One of the most important things is that children understand how crucial it is to be as sustainable as possible. After all, they are the ones who will have to live in this world for quite some time to come. A crucial part of learning is passing on a sustainable mindset and knowledge to the next generation.”

Lars has also observed the power of visibility and awareness when it comes to environmental action. “I have realised that when you organise something for the European Green Capital, you can attract positive attention. People like to receive recognition for the sustainable efforts they are making, and that recognition helps spread awareness about these important actions.”

He is particularly excited about the impact that Nijmegen’s European Green Capital title can have on children. “It is very cool for children that there will be a lot of press and (international) visitors in the city. This recognition can help motivate them to take action. One of the most important things is that children realize how essential sustainability is. Another advantage is that they can actively contribute themselves—it gives them an opportunity to become enterprising. That means there will be more sustainable projects in the future, and that’s always a good thing!”

For Lars, Nijmegen’s year as European Green Capital represents a great opportunity to make a lasting positive change and inspire others to follow suit. “I think Nijmegen was chosen as European Green Capital because its inhabitants want to become more sustainable. The whole of Europe could learn from that.”

The importance of engaging the next generation in environmental matters is not lost on Lars. “Climate change is a very bad thing, and if adults don’t want to listen, then children have to take action! Of course, children can try to convince adults, but it’s often more effective to start by convincing other children—for example, by giving a presentation in class. If more kids understand and take action, then hopefully adults will take notice and follow their example.”

Throughout 2018, we will continue checking in with Lars to hear more about the incredible work he is doing. In the meantime, you can explore more about his efforts through the website for Visie Van Kinderen. Veel succes, Lars!

But Lars’ ambitions don’t stop at environmental sustainability. He is also a strong advocate for including children in broader global discussions, such as climate change. His company, Vision of Kids, is dedicated to teaching young people how they can actively make a difference in their communities and the world at large. By empowering children to take the lead, Lars hopes to inspire lasting change and a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone.
