Environmental Liability Directive

2023 Evaluation - study workshop

The Environmental Liability Directive establishes a framework based on the ‘polluter pays’ principle to prevent and remedy environmental damage.

Commission services are currently evaluating the Directive to assess whether it is fit for purpose and identify any possible shortcomings, particularly in view of calls from the European Parliament and the European Court of Auditors to strengthen its application. The Commission has also commissioned the external contractor Bio Innovation Service to compile a study as part of the on-going evaluation process.

On 22 November 2022, the Commission, together with Bio Innovation Service are organising a workshop in Brussels to share Bio Innovations’s draft study findings with stakeholders and gather their feedback.

The workshop is open to environmental NGOs, industry representatives/operators (including small businesses), insurance and re-insurance sector companies, Member State representatives and other interested organisations.

The draft agenda is available below:

Those wishing to attend the workshop are requested to pre-register using the registration form available here by 8 November 2022. Those selected to attend should receive confirmation by 10 November 2022.
