What is the Cities Heat Detox Campaign?

Launched by the Covenant of Mayors, the ‘Cities Heat Detox’ campaign showcases how cities are cleaning up their heating systems to promote cleaner air, healthier communities, and a sustainable energy transition. This year-long initiative invites cities and towns of all sizes to share their journey in detoxifying their heat sources, with the ultimate goal of a climate-neutral future for Europe.

Why is heat detoxing so important and beneficial for all cities in the European Union?

Heating and cooling are responsible for nearly 80% of household energy use in the EU, contributing to 21% of the bloc’s greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonising these systems is key to meeting the EU’s climate neutrality goals. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels is then key as it will not only decrease emissions but also significantly improve air quality in densely populated urban areas, safeguarding the health of citizens.

In addition to that, by investing in modern, decarbonised district heating and sustainable technologies like heat pumps, cities are creating jobs and supporting a more energy-efficient economy. The recent energy crisis highlighted the risks of fossil fuel dependency, leading to price volatility and increased energy poverty. A switch to renewable heat sources will ensure long-term energy security, especially for vulnerable populations.

The next city to join the campaign could be yours!

Cities across the European Union have the potential to lead the way in the energy transition. By implementing smart heat planning and expanding district heating networks, local governments can phase out toxic sources of heat and build a healthier, more secure future.

Cities such as Tallinn, Guimarães, Dijon, Leuven, and Ghent –  all finalists and winners of the European Green Capital & Leaf Awards – are shining examples of cities embracing green innovations. Additionally, Valladolid, Miskolc, Munich, Lyon Metropole, and Guimarães (again), all signatories of the Green City Accord, are making remarkable progress in their commitment to a sustainable future. Your city could be the next to join this prestigious list.

All cities and towns all over Europe are invited to participate in this movement, share their successes, and collaborate in detoxifying their heating systems. Together, we can make European cities cleaner, healthier, and more resilient.
