On 30 and 31 May, the EU Ecolabel will celebrate its 30th anniversary at EU Green Week. A special birthday party on 31 May will include the launch of a new ‘Showroom on Wheels!’ to showcase the scheme’s contributions to environmental excellence and sustainable consumer choices.
The European Commission Director-General for the Environment, Florika Fink-Hooijer, will be on hand at the birthday bash to speak about EU Ecolabel’s milestones, in presence of the Belgian Minister of the Climate, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Green Deal, Zakia Khattabi, and offer words of encouragement to the ‘Showroom on Wheels!’ team as they set off on a journey around the continent.
Established in 1992 and recognised worldwide, the EU Ecolabel is the official EU label for environmental excellence, and it is awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their life-cycle, from raw material extraction to production, packaging, distribution and disposal.
The Showroom can best be described as a custom-made bicycle pulling a quirky single-berth caravan covered in messages heralding how EU Ecolabel has been guiding sustainable choices for 30 years. The van unpacks into a mini-exhibition including a sample of some of the best EU Ecolabel products, to illustrate the large range available today to EU consumers.
In fact, the EU Ecolabel scheme now covers more than 89,000 products in 24 different products group categories, and it has been fully embraced by the 27 EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, and Lichtenstein.
The campaign hits the road after the launch party in Brussels, Belgium and will pass through Germany, Estonia, Hungary and many more countries in a summer tour that ends back in Brussels and ready for the World Ecolabel Day in October.
Along the way, the Showroom will meet consumers from all walks (and rides!) of life, and share EU Ecolabel’s positive message of empowering sustainable choices, encouraging responsible business practices, tackling greenwashing, promoting less waste and emissions, and driving home the importance of cross-border solutions to environmental challenges.
Today’s consumers are looking to be reassured that they are making truly sustainable choices, and they can fully rely on the EU Ecolabel. This growing consumer awareness – backed by the political zeal seen in EU actions such as the European Green Deal, Zero Pollution and Circular Economy actions – is also driving more and more environmentally conscious businesses into the EU Ecolabel fold.
The ‘Showroom on Wheels!’ will be a fitting tribute to an enduring and increasingly trusted label of environmental excellence. You can track the Showcase team’s journey here and on our LinkedIn. Don’t miss it!
