As Sicily faces one of the worst droughts of the past decades, Euronews explores the effects of climate change on the availability of water in the region, almost all of which comes from underground. Actions are being taken to restore biodiversity, for example planting trees which increases the soil's capacity to retain water so that it remains moist and gives vegetation more chance to develop.
The community at the University of Catania is also looking for solutions, from wastewater reuse to making crops more drought resistant. The University is organising a series of events over the summer as part of EU Green Week 2024 and the #WaterWiseEU campaign, highlighting the importance of water resilience.
