Winning city 2020

@Lisbon

Despite facing significant historical challenges, including the devastating 1 755 earthquake and global economic downturn of 2008, Lisbon has emerged as a leader in environmental sustainability. The city has successfully demonstrated that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand, significantly improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Lisbon promotes sustainable urban mobility through various forward-thinking initiatives. In 2017, the city introduced a bike-sharing scheme featuring electric bikes, which comprise two-thirds of the fleet, to encourage cycling in its hilly terrain. Public transportation is a key priority for Lisbon. The city now boasts one of the world's most extensive electric vehicle charging networks, with 516 charging points available across the city for public and private electric vehicles. These efforts reflect the city’s commitment to reducing emissions, curbing car dependency and promoting cleaner, more efficient modes of transportation.

In addition to its mobility initiatives, Lisbon is deeply committed to preserving and enhancing its green spaces. The city has earned Sustainable Forest Management Certification for Monsanto Park, one of the largest urban forests in Europe. Further, Lisbon is developing the Vale de Alcântara green corridor, an ambitious project linking Monsanto Park with the Tagus River. This network of cycle paths and walkways improves access to nature, encourages outdoor recreation, and fosters biodiversity, while creating new green spaces and protecting local wildlife.

Lisbon adopts a holistic approach to urban planning that integrates sustainability into every aspect of city life. From water management and waste reduction to education and employment, the city engages a wide range of stakeholders—including citizens, businesses, universities, and international partners—in shaping its sustainability policies. This collaborative spirit drives innovation and strengthens Lisbon’s position as a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible city. Through these efforts, Lisbon continues to inspire other cities worldwide, reinforcing its role as a leader in building a greener, more resilient future.
