The issues affecting Romania’s waters

Solutions to the water issues in Romania exist

Improving access to drinking water and wastewater treatment is vital for Romania, as it still lags behind in implementing the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. In 2023, the country secured €166 million from the European Commission for water infrastructure development in Călărași, Giurgiu, Ialomița, and Ilfov.

Additionally, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) allocated a €14.5 million loan to Compania de Apa Olt SA, aiding water services in Olt County. With EBRD's support, Romania has seen €450 million in loans for 25 water operators, leveraging over €5 billion in EU funding.

Flood risks remain significant in Romania. However, the country has improved data collection, planning, and governance to address these risks, meeting the requirements of the EU Flood Directive. Investments outlined in Flood Risks Management Plans amount to approximately €3.7 billion, indicating a commitment to future flood management efforts.
