For many, a dream vacation involves lounging by the pool, soaking in a hot tub, or zooming down water park slides. But across southern Europe, water demand often outpaces supply.

The region attracts many tourists, but sadly, not enough rain. In an area where groundwater levels have reached historic lows and rainfall is becoming ever scarcer, the yearly influx of tourists is forcing the tourism industry to adapt and find sustainable solutions.

This episode of Water Matters examines how hotels and campsites have implemented water reuse, smart water meters and innovative water filters to both save and reuse water to stretch supplies.

One water park hotel in France has succeeded in saving 15% on water consumption per tourist. Another hotel in Catalonia, Spain, has implemented a circular approach to water management that supports guest facilities and the needs of the farm.

With effective water management and EU collaboration, the tourism industry can become more sustainable as part of a #WaterWiseEU.
