The European Commission recently announced the much anticipated list of 100 cities that will participate in the Cities Mission. The objective of the mission is to have these cities lead Europe toward a climate-neutral future by acting as hubs for experimentation and innovation. Of the 100 cities chosen from across the 27 Member States, and 12 partner cities selected from countries associated with Horizon Europe, 30 are Green City Accord signatories. Five of the six cities representing Finland in the Cities Mission and six of the seven cities from Spain have already signed the Green City Accord and pledged to take actions in five target areas of environmental management: air, water, nature and biodiversity, waste and circular economy, and noise.

An integral part of the 100 climate-neutral and smart cities’ commitment to realising a more resilient future is their dedication to an inclusive climate action approach. This includes addressing interrelated issues across sectors, such as waste management and improving citizens’ quality of life. The Green City Accord’s mission to create a clean and healthy urban future and further the implementation of relevant EU environmental laws at local level goes hand in hand with the 100 selected cities vow to spearhead Europe’s transition to climate neutrality. Work will complement and strengthen overall efforts to create a climate-neutral, sustainable urban future. For Europe to achieve a green, clean, healthy, and climate-neutral future, it is imperative that cities approach climate and environmental challenges holistically. The 100 climate-neutral and smart cities and 93 Green City Accord signatories, and counting, are one step closer to accomplishing this goal. Those that are party to both initiatives are blazing a trail of environmental resilience that others are bound to follow.
