As the 2026 wildfire season approaches, the shadow of last year’s destruction looms large. This is why the Commission has launched a new integrated strategy to tackle the rising wildfire threat.
It proposes strengthening ecosystem-based wildfire prevention to create fire-resilient landscapes and mitigate wildfire risk and impact through nature protection and restoration.
This includes implementing the Nature Restoration Regulation and new guidance on fire-resilient landscapes for Natura 2000 sites, including nature-based solutions.
The rescEU firefighting fleet has also been bolstered to 22 planes and 5 helicopters, reinforced by a 300-strong rapid-reaction force and a new European firefighting hub in Cyprus, designed to ensure we are ready before the first flame ignites.
