Áttekintés
Az EU hulladékgazdálkodási politikájának célja, hogy hozzájáruljon a körforgásos gazdasághoz azáltal, hogy a lehető legnagyobb mértékben kiváló minőségű erőforrásokat nyer ki a hulladékból. Az európai zöld megállapodás célja a növekedés előmozdítása a modern, erőforrás-hatékony és versenyképes gazdaságra való áttérés révén. Ennek az áttérésnek a részeként több hulladékkal kapcsolatos uniós jogszabályt is felülvizsgálnak.
A hulladékokról szóló keretirányelv az EU jogi kerete a hulladékok európai kezelésére. Bevezeti a hulladékgazdálkodás preferenciasorrendjét, az úgynevezett „hulladékhierarchiát”.
Bizonyos hulladékkategóriák speciális megközelítést igényelnek. Ezért az átfogó jogi keret mellett az EU-ban számos jogszabály foglalkozik a különböző hulladéktípusokkal.

Célok
Az EU hulladékgazdálkodási politikájának célja a környezet és az emberi egészség védelme, valamint az EU körforgásos gazdaságra való áttérésének elősegítése. Ennek érdekében célokat tűz ki a következő területeken:
- a hulladékgazdálkodás javítása;
- az újrahasznosítás innovációjának ösztönzése;
- a hulladéklerakás korlátozása.
